Mornos Artificial Lake

Mornos artificial lake is situated at an altitude of 500 meters and is surrounded by Vardoussia and Giona mountains. The lake was formed due to the creation of a dam (126 meters high) to cut the flow of Mornos River. Five hundred eighty million cubic meters of water flooded Kalio village and the region of ancient Gallipoli, thus creating an artificial reservoir with one main purpose: to supply water to the capital. The aqueduct (192 km channel length), which is considered the largest in Europe, was used to bring the water that comes from the snow of the mountains to the Athenian households.

Around the lake there is a paved but winding road that will bring you close to the most beautiful places of the area. Also, all around the wooded hills that surround the place you will find many villages (big or small). You can reach them by car provided that it has not snowed.
